Decided to go for a mountain bike ride and explore the local area before I leave in a week. Payed the $60 and rented out a nice Scott full sus mountain bike for the day.
The seat post was too small at first so toured back to the shop to change it for a larger one. I wiped out on a roundabout outside the shop in front of loadsa people as bottom of the crank scraped the roundabout which span me out cos of the crap ground clearance.
Got en route and first of all did the sunshine bay track which was a nice little easy going technical single track trail.
Then did the sven mile trackt that lasted about 30 mins. A 3.5 km, half hour long single track which can be used to join the dots between Arawata Track and Twelve Mile Delta. It starts about 6 km west of Queenstown on the left side of the road and rejoins the road about 9 km west of Queenstown. Great track by the lake that had as much uphill as downhill. Single track as well and some fun little sections.
Then got back onto the Glenorchy road for a mile or so and hit the 4wd track up towards Moke lake which I had to walk most of the way for all the steep climbs. After all the hiking I was awarded by a nice flat section by lake dispute and then a little climb to Moke lake across all farmland that was easy enough.
Got to Moke lake and then took the 4wd track Moonlight trail all the way round to the old ruined gold mining settlements of Sefferston and Macetown.
Just before Arthurs point, I took the path to Ben lomond that took bloody ages and I had to walk the whole way as the track was uphill and unriodeable. This track musta taken 2 hours which was absolutely kackering especially when I was climbing around 3,000 feet. I ran out fo water half way along the track which was pretty worrying specially with the dehydration. Found a lovely little stream though and filled up my bottles with the lovely fresh spring water.
After the tiring hike, I eventually made it to the saddle of Ben Lomond and Cecil peak where I was awarded with some specatcular views of Queenstown, the Remarks and the lake in the background. Could even see my house on Queenstown hill which was good especially as these are the mountains I stare at everyday I get out of bed.
I then had the 3,000 foot descent to the valley floor back to Queenstown where there was continuous purpose built mountain bike trails all the way down.
Stopped of at the Gondola for a breather and then carried on. Awesome trails and well worth the 2 or 3 hour hike to get here from the moonlight track.
Thankfully made it back home in one piece. What a great day and well worth the 7 hour journey even with jelly like legs. Couldnt of asked for better conditions. Gorgeous strong sunshine all day and a nice breeze that made it perfect temperature wise.
